Benefits of Virtual Reality in Medicine
Helpful in medicine?
Medical education is increasingly integrating virtual reality (VR) to enhance both technical and soft skills. VR offers innovative methods for training healthcare professionals, focusing on two main areas.
- The first area involves improving technical abilities that require advanced 3D visualization, such as procedural skills. VR is particularly effective in teaching subjects like anatomy, surgical techniques, and life-saving skills like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Tools like screen-based VR for surgical simulations, 3D visualization, and virtual worlds for training in high-pressure situations, such as CPR or emergency room scenarios, are commonly used in this context.
- The second area, which is less explored, focuses on teaching "soft skills" such as empathy and patient communication. This approach often involves the use of avatars or virtual patients that interact with users in specific ways, allowing learners to practice and improve their interpersonal skills in a simulated environment.
